Kennesaw Wins Regionals, Advances To Nationals

Wooster, Ohio -- Kennesaw State this season was said to go nowhere during regionals. However, the Owls would come to play and would knock out both the #3 and #4 seed. The team going into their second regionals in 2 years of being in Division 2 was dropping in rankings going for #6 to #9. For the first round they were paired against #4 UMBC, who already defeated Kennesaw earlier this season. The strong offensive force and strong coaching put 8 goals on the board from #27 Jerry Holden (2), #10 Hunter Gahl (2), #8 Rick Lirette (2), #12 Chris Koutnik and #21 Sean Bernhardt. Goalie Ben Powers held UMBC to only 5 goals. KSU won 8-5.

The Owls would return the following day to face #3 Miami of Ohio. Miami beat #10 seed Bowling Green 4-2 in the first round and have posed a big threat to the Owls in the past, KSU losing 2 games in Ohio. Miami still proved to be tough putting 2 goals first and outshooting KSU 21 to 2. Kennesaw would score late in the 2nd period by #16 Justin Blais. The Owls never gave up  and this tense game was pushed to the edge all the way to overtime, tying 3-3 from goals by #27 Jerry Holden and #11 Dylan Morrison. In overtime, the two physically exhausted teams would battle back and forth with Miami having a big opportunity to win with a penalty shot. With 56.1 seconds remaining in overtime, Holden and Morrison would get a 2 on 1 break. Holden would feed Morrison from the slot to the opposite post where Morrison would score top shelf from the short side. Kennesaw won in overtime 4-3.

Kennesaw is familiar with Nationals, winning the 2007 ACHA D3 Championships in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Owls then were the first team from the south to ever take the championship. This year the Owls face new Division 2 teams from all over the country in Grand Rapids, Michigan. More details to come.
